go animate

GoAnimate a cloud-based platform for making animated videos. It allows users to develop both narrative videos, in which characters speak with lip-sync and move around, and video presentations, in which a voice-over narrator speaks over images and props, which may also move around. GoAnimate has lots of options for creating quite slick videos. One can experiment with a wide variety of themes, characters, props, and animations. Students can type in what they want characters to say to hear a (somewhat robotic) voice speak the lines, or they can record their own lines directly into the video. The animations they create are then placed in the class “library” and can be seen by the teacher and other students when they log in. The packages for education institutes vary in price, from 54euros for an individual to 330 eruos for 5 teachers and 200 students.

Usage

In School: Teachers can create their own GoAnimate videos to flip classes, provide remediation for struggling students or to get students engaged about a new unit. Administrators could use videos to promote school programs, reinforce policies, or inform parents and community members about new initiatives. Importantly, students can create GoAnimate videos to demonstrate or extend learning. instead of a written report, a PowerPoint or a research paper, students can create an animated video.

Review

“I like that in GoAnimate there are many choices for themes to choose from. Some are more complicated and sophisticated, and others are more simple. There is one animation theme that only requires the user to choose between a few animal choices, and then simply type in the text to be spoken. On that particular theme the animation is already set, so it requires less tinkering, which might be good with younger students or students with limited computer skills. Students have a lot of fun with this app because of the many choices of characters, motions, and props..”-Teacher

blender

Blender is an open source software suite primarily used for the creation of 3D modelling, animation as well as for full video editing. Supported versions of Blender will run on Mac OS X, Windows, Linux and FreeBSD (which is basically Unix).

Usages

Blended can be used by students and educators to create interactive videos using clips and footage. Clips can be placed on a timeline, edited for length, overlapped with others, and joined with a range of transitions or fades. Moreover, various advanced features can also be accessed including 2D and 3D motion tracking, compositing of animated objects and real footage depending on how familiar the user feels with the software.

Review

“As Blender is an open source project the documentation can be a little random at times, but the healthy user forums mean that you can usually find the answer to your question without much difficulty. You will of course have a fair few questions because there is simply so much you can do with this software. If Blender was on sale for a couple of hundred pounds it wouldn’t look out of place. The fact that you get a package like this for free is….well, ridiculous.” PC Advisor

vimeo

Vimeo is a video sharing platform that users can upload, share and view videos from. It has a three tier pricing system that ranges from free accounts to premium accounts that cost 180euros per year. The tool is available in four languages, English, Spanish, German and French. Vimeo is a higher standard video tool to others as its standard definition is HD with higher alternatives available as well.

Usage

Within education Vimeo is sometimes considered a preferable option to YouTube as it has a simple interface and there is no-third part advertising. It can be used by students and teachers to share videos on specific topics, to create reflective videos supporting learning, to provide assessment and feedback or to create subject specific playlists. Vimeo, like YouTube, is useful for on the go learning as it provides users with an app they can download and view videos as they go.

Review

“Using Vimeo as a classroom tool is advantageous as it is free, Offers privacy options, 500 MB of storage every week, teachers/ students can upload 1 HD video per week, users can easily share videos (with other classes, or other students.) and unlike YouTube, feedback is generally positive and constructive. However, there are some limitations such as video authors/owners are not held accountable for accuracy of information in videos; content may not be objective and while students browse the different channels, they may be exposed to inappropriate material.”- Teachweb
